What is Thermogeist?
Thermogeist is a robust mechanical system that elegantly harvests and stores energy from wind, solar and combustible fuels (preferably carbon neutral), providing communities and businesses with reliable access to electricity, heat, and mechanical energy.
Thermogeist provides 24/7 on-demand access to clean energy in the form of:
- Electricity for lighting and digital devices.
- Heat for heating water, cooking, washing, drying, etc.
- Mechanical energy for activities such as threshing, milling, mixing, small-scale fabrication, restoration and repairs.

Where it works best
While Thermogeist is scalable to user needs and the differing availability of energy resources, it is ideal for compact communities of around 100 people who use an average of 5 to 6 kWh per capita per day. This includes:
- Rural communities that are not served by an electricity grid.
- Moderately sized apartment complexes in urban settings where residents must reduce their reliance on fossil fuels.
- Schools, clinics and small businesses where national grids are unreliable, over-invasive or unavailable.
Why Thermogeist Is Unique
- With no dependence on the electricity grid, Thermogeist is a reliable and truly off-grid energy system.
- Supplying energy in both the type and the grade required by end-use devices gives Thermogeist significant efficiency benefits.
- The proven longevity of the mechanical technologies used ensures that Thermogeist systems will last for many decades if appropriately maintained. By contrast, most other renewable technologies have very short lifespans (and vast global footprints) with solar PV at ±20 years, wind turbines at ±20 years, and lithium ion batteries at ±10 years.
- Thermogeist’s components are constructed using simple, widely available materials (steel, wood and ceramics) and require no black-box or imported technologies or rare earth elements.
- Being amenable to local manufacture, repair and maintenance, Thermogeist prioritises local skills development and job creation.
- The use of air as the primary working fluid makes Thermogeist safe to operate.
- The simplicity of the technology and materials means that all components are fully and easily recyclable, (unlike solar PV, large wind turbines and lithium ion batteries).
- Thermogeist is a small-scale system with minimal aesthetic impact or risk to local flora and fauna.
How it Works
Thermogeist is a complete and integrated system for harvesting, storing and supplying energy – a mini power station that users operate and maintain.

When will it be available?
The project is entering its test phase. A rigorous dynamic simulation of the full system is available, along with simulations of all its individual components. These have been used to develop high-level specifications and cost estimates for the building of a pilot plant and a full-sized system.
